Boyega will star in a film from Oscar-winning filmmaker Kathryn Bigelow.

VANITY FAIR – In six short months, John Boyega has achieved international fame via one of the world’s most popular film franchises and romanced Emma Watson onscreen in an upcoming thriller. Now, the 24-year-old British actor has reached another lofty milestone in his Hollywood ascent—a prime role in a movie that sounds as though it was custom-tailored for Oscar attention.

On Tuesday, Annapurna Pictures announced that Boyega will star in an untitled crime drama from Kathryn Bigelow, whose 2008 drama The Hurt Locker earned her best-director and best-picture Oscars. The film, which will be set in Detroit, is based on an original screenplay from Bigelow’s Oscar-winning Hurt Locker collaborator, Mark Boal.

Boyega confirmed the casting news himself on Twitter, although it is still unclear what character he will play.

In fact, the movie’s entire plot is under wraps for now; all we know is that the film will explore “systemic racism in urban Detroit” and will be set against the city’s “devastating riots that took place over five haunting summer days in 1967.” Producers are reportedly eyeing a 2017 release, which would mean the premiere would coincide with the 50th anniversary of the riots.

Earlier this month, Boyega was announced as the star of the Pacific Rim sequel. Later this year, Boyega will return to the screen in The Circle, the James Ponsoldt thriller starring Tom Hanks and Emma Watson, before reprising his role of Finn in Star Wars: Episode VIII, out next year.

TIME – John Boyega, the breakout star of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, continues to be one of Hollywood’s most lovable leading men.

Earlier this week, the 24-year-old actor spent the day visiting a local children’s hospice in England. Called Demelza Hospice Care for Children, the facility offers a place for terminally-ill children to receive care and spend their days as they undergo treatment. On Monday, they hosted a Star Wars-themed party where Boyega made an appearance.

In a touching video of the event, watch Boyega interact with the children, families, and staff, adding a little excitement to the day.

Boyega may just be a reluctant Stormtrooper who doesn’t have the Force, but he’s certainly making time to use his star power for good.

John Boyega said south east London was lucky to have such a facility

SOUTHWARK NEWS – The mother of a young terminally-ill girl has said her child enjoyed a “life-changing” experience when she met her hero – Star Wars star John Boyega.

The BAFTA-winning actor took a brief break from filming Star Wars Episode VIII to pay a visit to the Demelza Hospice, which looks after children from south east London, on June 13.

John, who was born in Camberwell and realised his acting talent at Theatre Peckham, said he wanted to help make the children’s dreams come true.

“I’d heard about the great work of Demelza so couldn’t wait to visit and help make some dreams come true,” he said. “I was blown away by the children and the nurses who do such a fantastic job of caring for them. South east London is extremely fortunate to have such an amazing charity on its doorstep, ensuring families get the support they need. I just hope people will continue to do what they can to support this great cause.”

Many of the children dressed as Star Wars characters for the occasion. Four-year-old Eshan, who suffers with a rare form of rickets, did his best Boyega impression whilst dressed as his character – the stormtrooper Fin.

His mum, Shara, said: “I don’t think I’ve ever seen Eshan so excited – it’s made his day.

“It’s been a very tough year so to see him so happy is absolutely wonderful. Days like today make our time here even more special.”

BBC – Star Wars actor John Boyega has become a patron of the theatre he worked with as a child.

The 24-year-old, who played stormtrooper Finn in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, was a member of Theatre Peckham’s company from age nine to 14.

He said he admired the theatre was “inspiring young people like myself to be the change we want to see in the industry”.

Boyega is currently filming the eighth instalment of the Star Wars franchise.

“I admire Theatre Peckham’s continued mission to increase diversity in the creative industries,” he said.

“As a graduate of the company, I am honoured to be in a position to give back.”

The theatre’s founder and artistic director, Teresa Early, said Boyega’s role as patron “will be a huge boost for our young members”, adding: “Now there’s an act for them to follow.”

The theatre’s other patrons include actors Sir Ian McKellen, Jenny Agutter and David Harewood, and theatre director Paulette Randall.

Boyega is due to return to the stage in The Old Vic’s production of Woyzeck in February 2017.

EW – Lupita Nyong’o got a Star Wars surprise, and luckily it wasn’t a trap.

The actress behind the goggle-eyed alien mentor Maz Kanata in the space-fantasy series received a special recorded message from one of her costars during a Thursday appearance on Good Morning America.

In a cellphone video, an exuberant John Boyega declared, “Lupita Nyong’o — she’s forged by the gods, she has a face that mathematically makes sense, and she’s definitely, definitely talented!”

Boyega scored a breakout role as the ex-Stormtrooper Finn, one of the central trio of young heroes in the new Star Wars trilogy along with Daisy Ridley’s Rey and Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron.

“I’m on Star Wars [Episode VIII] right now shooting,” he continued. “We’re missing you, we’re missing your wisdom and missing your grace. Honestly, I can’t wait to see you.”

Nyong’o, who is currently promoting The Jungle Book and will rejoin Boyega in Episode VIII, said the actor is “such a good leader when it comes to Star Wars because he’s so amped up! He grew up on Star Wars, it’s in his blood.”

EMPIRE – It’s difficult now to imagine Star Wars: The Force Awakens without John Boyega or Kingsman: The Secret Service without Taron Egerton. But speaking to Empire for the new issue, the latter’s director Matthew Vaughn has recalled how it could all have been so very different.

Vaughn’s search for Eggsy, Kingsman’s walking-ASBO-turned-gentleman-spy, ended up a straight choice between The Man Who Would Be Finn and The Man Who Would Be Eddie Edwards. Post-Attack The Block, Boyega was a known quantity. Egerton meanwhile, had turned heads on the London theatre scene but had yet to make a film.

“It was a tough call,” Vaughn tells us. “Boyega is a fabulous actor, but there’s something about Taron. You have to listen to your instincts about who that role is. John’s probably thinking, ‘Thank fuck he didn’t cast me!’ because he might never have been in Star Wars!”

Oddly, there’s a possibility that Star Wars now lurks in Egerton’s future too: he’s one of the names reputedly on the shortlist to play the young Han Solo in the developing spin-off.

Vaughn’s Kingsman sequel The Golden Circle starts shooting imminently for a release next summer. Check out the new Empire, out next week, for much more on that. Star Wars: The Force Awakens is out on Blu-ray and DVD on April 18.

WALL STREET JOURNAL – John Boyega is as big a “Star Wars” geek as many of the moviegoers who pushed J.J. Abrams‘s “The Force Awakens” beyond the $2 billion mark at the global box office. The proof is in the video above.

In the clip, provided exclusively to Speakeasy, Boyega freaks out when he sees the Millennium Falcon for the first time. Not only is it there in proper scale, a dream come true for any fan of the franchise, he will get to work inside the spacecraft, which made its debut in 1977′s original “Star Wars.”

The clip comes from the bonus features for the upcoming home video release of “The Force Awakens,” which will include an in-depth documentary about the making of the movie, a look at how the crew created the droid BB-8, deleted scenes and more.

“Star Wars: The Force Awakens” will be available through video on demand services April 1, and on Blu-ray and DVD on April 5.
