VARIETY  — “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” breakout John Boyega and “Diary of a Teenage Girl” star Bel Powley made their debut at Cannes last night, receiving this year’s Chopard Trophy from from the hands of Juliette Binoche and Variety Vice President and Executive Editor Steven Gaydos.

The pair, who had never met, said they immediately clicked, and it showed when they started joshing around at the cocktail, which gathered high-profile guests, including Cannes President Pierre Lescure; Cannes jury members Kirsten Dunst, Mads Mikkelsen and Laszlo Nemes; Chopard’s Caroline Scheufele; and producer Elizabeth Karlsen. The duo sat down with Variety following the ceremony to talk about their blossoming careers.

Variety: So it’s your first time in Cannes and you got here 12 hours ago. Have you had any interesting encounters?

Boyega: We met each other and that’s already great! Our paths have always crossed, but we’ve never had an official conversation.

Powley: We’ve been at the same places but we’ve never actually conversed.

So maybe one day you can star in a movie together. So tell me, you’re shooting the next “Star Wars” installment?

Boyega: Yes, I’m in the thick of it now so it’s nice to be here, see the view and then go back.

And then, straight back into the shoot?

Boyega: Yes, straight back.

You see, today, more than any other day, young Padawan, is a celebration of George Lucas’s extensive universe — and you don’t have to live in a galaxy far, far away to participate in the festivities.

This year, Star Wars newbies Daisy Ridley and John Boyega — Ridley is currently busy filming Star Wars: Episode VIII (NBD) — were hella excited to take part in the fandom celebration. Here’s how precious humans Ridley, Boyega, and the rest of the Star Wars cast celebrated their big day.

ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT – Even princes geek out when it comes to Star Wars.

Prince Harry and Prince William visited the Star Wars set at Pinewood Studios in England on Tuesday, and it’s safe to say they had plenty of fun during their tour. The brothers were shown around by British actress Daisy Ridley, who played Rey in Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, and also met up with John Boyega (Finn), Mark Hamill (Luke Skywalker), and Star Wars: Episode VIII director Rian Johnson.

METROJohn Boyega has said a romance between Finn and Poe Dameron in Star Wars 8 is possible.

This should make a few shippers very happy.

Since The Force Awakens opened some Star Wars fans have had a theory that Boyega’s Stormtrooper Finn, and Oscar Issac’s pilot Poe could be more than just friends.

Well they are already wearing each other’s clothes.

After initially shooting the idea down in flames, BAFTA-winner Boyega has now said anything could happen in the Star Wars universe.

Speaking to press backstage after winning the Rising Star Award on Sunday (via Radio Times), he said: ‘What’s so funny, I posted a video the other day of myself working out, skipping, and in the background Oscar is just like, “Yeah baby go on!” and people just went crazy.

COMING SOON – You’ll never see the ending of Star Wars, and there’s no better way to be reminded of the dominance of the franchise than a Walt Disney Company quarterly earnings call. Speaking about the profitability of Star Wars: The Force Awakens and its merchandise, CEO Bob Iger revealed that not only has production begun on Star Wars: Episode VIII, but also that work on Star Wars: Episode IX is underway too.

“Filming of Star Wars: Episode VIII, the next chapter of the legendary saga, has just commenced and it will be in theaters December 2017. And production of Episode IX, a 2019 release, has also begun.”

Actor John Boyega took to Twitter to reveal how he marked the beginning of filming for the movie.

Iger went on to speak about the upcoming Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, saying filming is almost finished, a bit of a surprise since production began back in September.

COMICBOOK – Citing the success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens as a record-setting December debut, Walt Disney Studios announced today that Star Wars: Episode VIII, the direct sequel to the film and second part of a planned trilogy, will release on December 15, 2017.

That is a changed date, originally scheduled for May 26, 2017, which would have put Star Wars back to its traditional late May release schedule. The movie will instead now be the third December release in a row for the franchise, with Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, a film that takes place just prior to the original first film in the series, due out December 2016. It appears this may be Disney’s ongoing plan now – after proving they can have a well-over billion dollar release in the traditionally light month of December, putting Star Wars there on a more permanent basis could prove lucrative to them.

May will continue to be home to an annual Marvel Studios release, with Captain America: Civil War, Guardians of the Galaxy Vol 2, and Avengers: Infinity War scheduled for the next three May first weekends. Disney also announced that they’re moving Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales from its July 2017 release into the May 26, 2017 slot they have just opened.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens now holds forty box office records, including the largest domestic, global, December, and Holiday debuts of all time. The film has the highest domestic gross ever, currently at $861 million after five weekends, and an international gross of over $1 billion for a current worldwide cume of $1.887 billion.
